Don’t let the “noise” derail you

At ExcellenceK12, we have a habit of listening in on what’s happening with our school district clients by monitoring social media in various markets, following news stories and getting direct feedback from clients and friends.

What we are hearing lately is jarring – a lot of negative patron “noise.” Much of the noise is coming from parents who are upset for one or a variety of reasons. This kind of noise can feel overwhelming.

What you are not likely hearing, but is also happening, is parents and patrons praising you for your efforts. This large group of people supports you, but it often does not express its opinions publicly.

So, as you navigate these turbulent times, here are a few reminders to help bring you a little peace of mind:

  • The naysayers will always be louder than the “silent majority,” who approve of what you are doing but don’t feel the need to trumpet their support.
  • You are better informed than a random parent who watched two YouTube videos and thinks he or she is now an expert on planning during a pandemic.
  • People who understand what it takes to manage a school district understand you are doing the best you can in a really difficult situation.
  • This too shall pass; there will be, undoubtedly, some other issue next week that will push the current “noise” to the back burner.
  • Ignorance is the enemy. Always look to educate the naysayers, so they come to understand exactly what is at stake and know your decisions are for the health and well-being of your staff and students.

You and your Board of Education are doing a tremendous job under extremely adverse circumstances. Even your most vocal critics will come to realize this in time – with hindsight being 20/20 (even in 2020) and all that. So, take what you are hearing with a grain of salt. Yes, people are angry, and some of them may not get over their anger, but you can’t let the noise distract you from your duty or cause you to waver in your purpose.

We know you are doing everything you can to create the best learning opportunity possible and leaving no stone unturned. Thank you for your efforts and keep up the good work!
