The one thing

If you haven’t read it, go buy the book The One Thing, by Gary Keller. It’s informative, well-written and will help any organization zero in on the one thing it needs to do to become more successful.

At ExcellenceK12, we know school superintendents have more than one thing to focus on — probably closer to 100 things — and that’s just in one day! Reading the book got our team thinking about what we might do if we were a superintendent.

Since we are vendors, we only think in terms of our services (duh). And since we all work remotely, where we don’t have to follow office rules, we actually thought of two things.

The first thing we’d do as a superintendent is complete a State-of-the-District Survey. If you haven’t checked the pulse of your patrons lately, this is a great and inexpensive way to reach out to your four key constituent groups: students, staff, parents and patrons. We conduct four online surveys, inexpensively, so you can do one every year and track your progress on a number of issues and practices.

September is the perfect time to roll it out. If you want a referral, contact Lonnie Moser at USD 415 in Hiawatha, Kan., and ask him about his survey.

The second thing we’d do as a superintendent is a Spend Review. For $350, we’ll look at every nickel you’re spending and then make recommendations for existing bulk contracts you can use to save money. It works every single time and if we find we can’t save you any money, we won’t even charge you the $350.

Do it now, so you can start saving money now. Need a reference? Contact Destry Brown at the Clinton School District in Clinton, Mo.
