Almost 30 years ago, I accidentally learned a lesson that has served me well for decades.
I was playing golf at a course in Dallas and, miraculously, I was doing great. With a 12 handicap, I managed to get through the first eight holes at even par.
The ninth hole was a short, dogleg-left par four leading back to the clubhouse. I must have had visions of joining the PGA tour in my head because I got all amped up and hit a horribly bad 3-wood that ended up in the middle of fairway #1. At this point, I had no idea how far I was from the green.
What did I do? I guessed, of course, and hit a 4-iron as hard as I could, which was a big mistake.
My ball sailed over the green, struck the clubhouse, ricocheted down the sidewalk leading to the practice putting green and wound up just left of the tee box on #10.
The lesson I learned that day was “guessing doesn’t work.”
These days, I do absolutely everything I can to avoid guessing. It’s one of the reasons I started offering opinion research – to help clients avoid guessing, especially about mission-critical decisions, like bond issues.
If you are contemplating a bond issue for the fall, take out the guesswork by doing a pre-election research survey now. With this survey, you will learn:
- What voting patrons think about your district.
- What kind of ballot proposals patrons are willing to support.
- How much patrons are willing to pay in new taxes.
Those who have taken out the guesswork have had success at the ballot box.
“I want to thank ExcellenceK12 and their efforts in putting together a survey that is not only accurate but helps educate our community in relation to our plans for bond and levy issues,” said Dr. Andrew Underwood, Belton School District superintendent. “Thank you for the great work. It is worth every penny!”
